My great-great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Phinney, enlisted in the Ohio Voluntary Infantry in 1861 at the age of 17 without his parent's consent. He fought at Cumberland Gap, Chickasaw Bluff, Champion Hill, and Vicksburg. After occupying Plaquemine, Louisiana for nearly a year with the 42nd, he returned to Lorain County, Ohio. His mother had died in his absence, and his father remarried a much younger woman. Only months into their marriage, Benjamin's father (Benjamin Phinney, Sr.) died in a mysterious rat poisoning incident. His new wife was charged with the murder and the trail was publicized in newspapers as far away as California. The testimony detailed in these newspapers gives the most vivid insight into the daily lives of any of my ancestors. The new young wife was acquitted and the death was never explained. Benjamin went on to marry Ava Barnum and had a career as a local merchant, postmaster, and real estate broker. He was active in the Republican Party and the Grand Army of the Republic veterans organization for Union soldiers. Benjamin and Ava's daughter, Alice May, married Frederick L. Prentiss in 1900, etc., etc.
